Pub chain JD Wetherspoon grew like for like sales by more than expected during the second quarter despite the snow and predicts a "reasonable" outcome for the full year.Like for like sales for the 12 weeks to 16 January rose 3%, up from 1.6% in the first quarter and much better than the flat performance predicted by some analysts. That means like for like sales are up 2.3% so far this financial year. The impact of the snow and ice was "minimal" as harsh weather had also affected business the previous year, said the firm, which has opened 12 new pubs and closed two during the period to date.Total sales increased by 8.1% in the second quarter, ahead of the 7.3% improvement posted for at the start of the financial year. They're up 7.7% for the 25 weeks."Sales, profit and cashflow continue to be resilient and the performance of our recently opened pubs remains encouraging," the company said Wednesday. But it did flag the rising cost of supplies, utilities and excise duties."In spite of these affects of a harsher economic climate, the company is confident of a reasonable outcome for the year as a whole, helped by investments in new and existing pubs," said Wetherspoon, expected to make about £70m over the 12 months. Results for the six months ending 23 January are out on 11 March.
