Week ahead: French EDP, BoE in focus

(Sharecast News) - All eyes over the coming week are likely to remain on France and the newsflow ahead of the first round of voting in parliamentary elections at the end of June.

In particular, a decision from Brussels on whether or not to start a so-called Excessive Deficit Procedure against Paris is expected during the week.

As well, euro area purchasing managers' indices for manufacturing and services to be released on Friday may yield a first glimpse into French businesses' reaction to Emanuel Macron's surprise decision to call a snap poll.

Against that backdrop, the Bank of England will announce its latest interest rate decision on Thursday.

No change in policy is anticipated, but the Monetary Policy Committee is expected to lay the groundwork for a first reduction in Bank Rate at August's MPC meeting.

Also scheduled to be published, on Friday, are readings for UK consumer confidence and retail sales.

Rate-setters Down Under will announce their own interest rate decision on Tuesday, followed by their peers in China and Switzerland on Thursday.

In the States meanwhile, monthly retail sales figures due out on Tuesday will provide useful information as to how the real side of that economy is holding up.

US industrial production data, also for the month of May, will be published shortly afterwards during the same session.
