US pre-open: Futures higher as Q1 earnings start to roll in

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street futures were in the green ahead of the bell on Tuesday as traders looked ahead to a fresh batch of Q1 earnings from a number of the nation's biggest companies.

As of 1300 BST, Dow Jones futures were up 0.09%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures had the indices opening 0.23% and 0.34% firmer, respectively.

The Dow closed 312.08 points higher on Monday as surprise tariff exemptions gave sentiment a leg-up.

Tuesday's primary focus will likely be earnings from banking giants Bank of America and Citigroup, with the former topping analysts' estimates on the back of better-than-expected interest income and trading, while the latter's results also beat analysts' estimates thanks to gains in fixed income and equities trading.

Elsewhere, pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson hiked its quarterly dividend payout by 4.8% on Tuesday as it delivered Q1 revenue and EPS that came in above estimates on the Street at $21.89bn and $2.77 per share, respectively.

Trade Nation's David Morrison said: "This fresh positivity followed on from some encouraging, if confusing, tariff comments from the Trump administration after Friday's market close. President Trump refined his reciprocal tariffs once again, this time by exempting smartphones and other electronics. He also made it clear that the administration was looking at semiconductors and pharmaceuticals as the next sectors for specific levies. But this news was tempered after he also said he was considering temporary exemptions to tariffs on imported vehicles and parts.

"Markets remain skittish, and investors feel safer sitting on their hands for now, hoping that last week's worrying dislocations revert back to normal."

On the macro front, March's import and export price indices will be published at 1330 BST, as will the New York Empire State manufacturing index.
