Books and stationery retailer WH Smith was higher after reporting a smaller-than-expected decline in underlying sales from its Travel division.UK pub operator JD Wetherspoon rose after a strong pick-up in like-for-like revenue growth in the second quarter covering the key Christmas period.Property company Grainger was also higher after receiving planning permission to build 84 new homes in the London boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea.Meanwhile, HSBC lowered its recommendation for miner African Barrick Gold to 'neutral', making the stock one of the biggest fallers on the second tier index, reversing yesterday's strong gains which came after it beat its full fiscal-year guidance for gold production, which reached 641,931 ounces (sales: 649,742 ounces).Kazakhmys was another big faller; it was downgraded to neutral by Westhouse Securities earlier this week.
